Holden Torana – Legendary Australian Performance Car

The Holden Torana was produced in Australia from 1967 through to 1980, becoming one of Holden’s most successful and well-known performance vehicles. The name “Torana” is believed to originate from an Aboriginal word meaning “to fly”, a fitting description for a car that would go on to build a strong reputation for speed and agility.

Early Torana Development

The original Torana debuted in 1967 as a compact four-cylinder sedan derived from the Vauxhall Viva platform used in the United Kingdom during the mid-1960s. While initially positioned as an economical small car, the Torana platform soon became the foundation for a range of high-performance variants developed by Holden.

Performance Success

A major milestone for the model was the introduction of the LJ Torana GTR XU-1, which featured significant improvements to engine performance, suspension setup, and overall handling. These enhancements helped establish the Torana as a serious competitor in Australian motorsport.

Throughout the 1970s the Torana proved extremely successful in touring car racing and rally competition, becoming one of Holden’s most celebrated performance vehicles prior to the arrival of the Commodore.

LJ Torana Updates

In February 1972, Holden released the updated LJ Torana, which featured refreshed styling and several mechanical refinements. The six-cylinder versions adopted design elements that visually linked the car to the larger HQ Holden range.

While many components were carried over from the earlier LC model, Holden introduced updated engine options, including the 3300 engine, which powered the LJ Torana GTR sedan.

Overall production of the LJ Torana reached 81,813 vehicles, with most built in Australia and a portion exported to New Zealand.
