Holden HT Monaro (1969) – Australian Muscle Car Collectible

The Holden HT Monaro, released in 1969, was the facelift successor to the hugely successful HK Monaro and quickly became one of the most recognised Australian muscle cars of its era. The HT introduced a number of mechanical, styling, and performance upgrades that further strengthened Holden’s presence both on the road and on the racetrack.

Performance and Engine Updates

One of the biggest changes in the HT lineup was the replacement of the earlier 327 cubic-inch V8 with the larger 350 cubic-inch engine. When paired with the 4-speed manual transmission, this engine produced approximately 300 brake horsepower, delivering strong performance and making the HT Monaro a serious contender in the growing Australian performance car market.

Mechanical Improvements

The HT Monaro also received several upgrades compared with the HK model, including:

  • A redesigned instrument cluster with an integrated tachometer

  • Revised suspension tuning for improved handling

  • Thicker front brake discs to enhance braking performance

These changes helped improve both the driving experience and overall vehicle control.

Styling Changes

Visually, the HT Monaro featured a number of distinctive updates that set it apart from the earlier HK model:

  • A redesigned plastic front grille replacing the metal version

  • Taller wrap-around tail lights

  • A flat rear boot lid panel replacing the earlier undercut design

  • Twin bonnet air scoops, giving the car a more aggressive muscle-car appearance

While the bonnet scoops were largely cosmetic, they became one of the most recognisable styling elements of the HT Monaro.

Motorsport Heritage

The HT Monaro continued Holden’s success in Australian motorsport. In 1969 the Holden Dealer Team (HDT) was formed and entered three HT Monaros in the Bathurst 500. The HDT 44D Monaro, driven by Colin Bond and Tony Roberts, went on to win the race.

The HT Monaro also achieved further racing success when Norm Beechey won the 1970 Australian Touring Car Championship, cementing the car’s place in Australian racing history.
