Introduced in 1963, the Holden EH quickly became one of Australia’s best-selling vehicles. Featuring updated styling, a brand-new engine, and strong value for money, it set sales records as the fastest-selling car in the country at the time. Designed to appeal to a broad market, the EH range included nine variants, among them two commercial options—the Utility and Panel Van—which retained the rear design carried over from the earlier EJ series.
A key advancement was the introduction of Holden’s “Red” engine. This new power unit delivered both increased performance and improved efficiency compared to the outgoing “Grey” engine, while also requiring less maintenance. The 149 cubic inch version produced 100 horsepower—around 33% more than its predecessor—while the 179 cubic inch option delivered 115 horsepower, representing a 50% increase. Although both engines, along with the Hydramatic automatic transmission, were available across the commercial models, most were sold with the 149 engine paired to a manual gearbox.
Built with practicality in mind, these vehicles were engineered for work duties. They featured durable laminated hardwood trays and were rated to carry loads of up to half a ton. A notable functional detail was the omission of the driver’s side door lock, intended to improve efficiency for delivery drivers frequently entering and exiting the vehicle.
Inside, the cabin was purpose-built for commercial use, offering approximately 79 cubic feet of cargo capacity along with a hard-wearing laminated timber floor. At the rear, authentic design elements include telescopic metal arms supporting the upper tailgate and retaining cables for the lower section, mirroring the original vehicle’s construction.
While the Standard interior lacks some of the chrome detailing found in the Special variant, it still showcases a finely crafted steering wheel and instrument cluster. Bench seating features embossed detailing consistent with the Standard trim, which is also reflected in the door panels.
Additional details include colour-matched pressed steel wheels fitted with chrome monogrammed hubcaps and rubber tyres. Under the bonnet, the accurately replicated 149 engine and engine bay are complemented by smoothly operating metal hinges. The underside reveals further realism, with visible components such as the sump, exhaust system, and functional suspension. The front wheels are connected to the steering system, allowing them to turn with the steering wheel.
Each model is completed with a uniquely numbered etched metal plate mounted on the chassis, identifying its individual edition.
